Friends or Foes? Mobile money interaction with formal and informal finance

Access to formal financial services is a key determinant of inclusion and yet, informal mechanisms still dominate the system in developing countries. In this context, purpose our article investigate how growing effort harness mobile money designed for unbanked individuals may help overcome barriers access services. Using unique dataset obtained from an individual-level survey conducted Burkina Faso, we explore interplay between innovation pre-existing instruments. Our main findings show that, overall there are no differences inclination users non-users make deposits or deposit However, closer investigation reveals suggestive evidence that it increase probability participants instruments, especially using bank account. Moreover, considering disadvantaged groups, find women, irregular income less educated their and/or credit union accounts. results robust instrumental variables propensity score matching techniques mitigate endogeneity problem. They also pass number robustness checks as well alternative dataset. Given low countries, taken together indicate increasing adoption act stepping-stone towards inclusion.
